When you need to find used equipment for sale for your business, there are a lot of options available. But when you need to find quality used dump trucks, do you know how to look over the equipment to see whether it fits your needs and will be a good investment for your company? It’s okay if you don’t, because this article will walk you through the basics to ensure you make a good purchase. Here’s what to look for:

How to Inspect Used Dump Trucks to Ensure a Solid Investment

  1. As with most gas or diesel fueled vehicles, you’ll want to start underneath the hood. Are there any signs of leaks? What about dry rot in the hoses or belts? Take a minute and pull the oil, brake and transmission dipsticks. Has there been an analysis of the fluids that’s available for review? Can you find specks of metal in the fluid? One easy way to check this is by putting a magnet in the fluid and seeing if it draws up any metal shavings or dust, which could indicate a serious problem with the system in question.
  2. Next, take a solid look at the hydraulic system. Is the pump working properly? Are there any dents or bends in the cylinders or pistons? Is the hydraulic fluid in good shape? What about the hoses – are they showing any signs of age or dry rot? The hydraulic system is the powerhouse that moves the load out of the bed, so if it isn’t working properly, you’re going to lose a lot of efficiency on a work site. Are there any signs of leaks throughout the system? Have there been any welds or repairs made that don’t seem quite right? These are serious concerns, so make sure you take a good look.
  3. Take a look at the tires to see if they’re in good shape and have adequate tread left for the job. It’s okay if they don’t, but take the cost of new tires into consideration. If, on the other hand, they have an odd wear pattern, this could be a sign of something seriously wrong. Take a good look at the bed, body, cab and controls. Are they showing more wear than the mileage or hours would justify? You may be looking at a machine with an odometer issue.
  4. What shape are the frame, rails and axles in? These components will need to hold up the load you’re carrying, so if they’ve had bad repairs or are rusting badly, you may want to pass on that machine. If the frame rails are sagging, the dump truck could have been significantly overloaded, causing damage to its structure. An upward curve, on the other hand, means that it could have been used with the box loaded and upright, also damaging the structure.
  5. Now it’s time to see how it runs and check the paperwork. The engine should run smoothly and the transmission shift smoothly. What about the hydraulics – do they move smoothly and relatively quietly? You should take a solid look at any repair logs and make sure the current owner has a clear, legal title at the same time.

Once you’ve had an opportunity to inspect a few used dump trucks, you’ll start to get a much better feel for quality when you’re looking at used machinery for sale, even if it’s online. In fact, many businesses find online auctions that are focused specifically on heavy equipment to offer much better selection and features than local auctions.
