Types and Features of Used Backhoes Available at Auction

Types of Backhoes

The first thing to consider is what type of backhoe do you need for your project. Here are a few different types to consider:

  • Excavators: The powerhouses of backhoes, an excavator is a dedicated machine. Typically track mounted, it features a much larger bucket and capacity to cut and lift in tough soils.
  • Loader Excavators: A loader excavator provides a multi-purpose option for your operation on a wheel mounted chassis. It features a loader scoop on the front, with the ability to swivel the seat to use the backhoe on the back. These tools are typically mounted on a large utility tractor frame permanently.
  • Mini Excavators: A much smaller version of an excavator, a mini excavator helps you get into and out of tight spaces. It may or may not feature a scraper blade and is typically track mounted.
  • PTO-Based Excavators: If you have a lot of different tools you need to use on the same frame, a PTO-based backhoe can be quickly attached to a standard tractor body, then removed to allow the attachment of other equipment.

Backhoe Features:

Knowing the size and kind of backhoe you need, what features should you look for? Here are some possibilities:

  • Bucket Size: Buckets on backhoes come in a wide range of sizes, depending on what type of power you have behind it. On any single backhoe, you usually have a selection of options to consider to help you get work done faster, but make sure you stick with a smaller bucket for heavy soils to prevent overloading the machine.
  • Bucket Reconfiguration: A backhoe is called such because it pulls the scoop backwards towards the machine. But on some backhoes, the bucket can be reconfigured to scoop in a forward direction. If you don’t have a lot of clearance above ground where you’re digging, this can make it a little easier to avoid causing damage during the digging process.
  • Horsepower: As with any machine, the horsepower determines how much work can be done. A backhoe can be anywhere from 10-15 horsepower on the low end to well over 100 horsepower on heavy construction equipment.

Used backhoes are a great way to save your company money by purchasing used machinery for sale, allowing you to avoid the extra padding that was incorporated into the price.
